THE NIGHT ALIVE
by CONOR MCPHERSON Produced in association with Red Line Productions. DIRECTOR: MAELIOSA STAFFORD CAST: JOHN O'HARE, PATRICK DICKSON, SARAH JANE KELLY, LAURENCE COY, DARREN SABADINA PRODUCER: HILLARY RAY COSTUME & SET DESIGN: ALISON BRADSHAW & PATRICK DICKSON LIGHTING DESIGN: MARTIN KINNANE SOUND DESIGN: MATT OSBOURNE STAGE MANAGEMENT: BRONTE SHUFTAN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: MATHEW LEE ‘YOU ONLY GET A FEW GOES. AT LIFE. YOU DON’T GET ENDLESS GOES. TWO, THREE GOES MAYBE. WHEN YOU HIT THE RIGHT GROOVE YOU’LL CLICK RIGHT IN THERE…THIS IT IS.’ Tommy’s not a bad man, he’s getting by. Renting a run-down room in his Uncle Maurice’s house, just about keeping his ex-wife and kids at arms length and rolling from one get-rich-quick scheme to another with his pal Doc. Then one day he comes to the aid of Aimee, who’s not had it easy herself, struggling through life the only way she knows how. Their past won’t let go easily. But together there’s a glimmer of hope they could make something more of their lives. Something extraordinary. Perhaps. Conor McPherson’s new play deftly mines the humanity to be found in the most unlikely of situations. |
SOME FANTASTIC REVIEWS
'The performances are finely shaded....... O'Hare has the perfect measure of Tommy's rumpled, unwashed charm. Kelly captures the beauty and the ugliness in her role and when Tommy and Aimee dance to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On?, you'll feel your heart swell." - Jason Blake, Sydney Morning Herald Full review 18/9/17: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/stage/sydney-stage/a-damsel-in-distress-electrifies-the-life-of-a-loner-in-conor-mcphersons-the-night-alive-20170918-gyjjwl.html ★★★★ "This production, directed by Stafford, is yet another example of the world class theatre that’s going on in the bowels of the humble Old Fitzroy pub... The Night Alive is ultimately a bittersweet portrayal of lost souls looking for a way out. Its two hours go by in a flash." - Nick Dent, TimeOut Full review: https://www.timeout.com/sydney/theatre/the-night-alive "In the tradition of resorting to humour to handle weighty and desperate situations, THE NIGHT ALIVE considers the hope that can come from having the right outlook when life keeps throwing setbacks and challenges. Director Maeliosa Stafford has created a fabulously entertaining and engaging interpretation of McPherson's award winning play" - Jade Kops, Broadway World Full review 17/9/17: https://www.broadwayworld.com/sydney/article/BWW-REVIEW-Presented-With-Heart-and-Humour-Hope-Rises-Out-Of-Bleak-Existence-In-THE-NIGHT-ALIVE-20170917 "McPherson uses the pauses, unfinished sentences and monosyllabic responses of natural dialogue .... Stafford’s direction emphasises that naturalness and the complexity he and his cast have found in each of the characters... ... they have certainly ‘hit the right groove’." - Carol Wimmer, Stage Whispers Full review: http://www.stagewhispers.com.au/reviews/night-alive "O’Punksky’s Theatre production is a genuinely beautiful show... The Night Alive is another great night of theatre and definitely one for the boys. Take the man in your life and enjoy a good long chat after." - Lisa Thatcher Full review 23/9/17: https://lisathatcher.com/2017/09/23/the-night-alive-a-duying-man-and-a-world-passed-by-theatre-review/ "Director Maeliosa Stafford brings to the stage the quintessential Irishness of its characters, offering an intriguing glimpse into a culture that oscillates between familiar and exotic. With McPherson’s fascinating dialogue, the other side of the planet is turned immediate" - Suzy Wrong, Suzy Goes See Full review 16/9/17: https://suzygoessee.com/2017/09/16/review-the-night-alive-opunkskys-theatre/ |
